Thomas Circle Singers Presents Baroque Treasures May 15
Local Non-Profit Will Benefit from All Ticket Sales
WASHINGTON, DC—Rhythmic, elegant works by Lotti, Bach, Schütz
and Vivaldi will be presented by the award-winning Thomas Circle Singers during
Baroque Treasures, the group’s spring
concert. All proceeds of the May 15
concert will assist Beacon House
Community Ministry, a local non-profit organization that seeks to develop
youth leadership.
The Thomas Circle
Singers (TCS), a 34-voice mixed choral ensemble, along with orchestra, will
fill the air with these sounds at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at St. Columba's Episcopal Church , 4201
Albemarle Street, NW, Washington, DC.
Among the
selections TCS will perform include Bach’s Cantata
172 Erschallet, ihr Lieder. This six-movement
work, written for the Sunday of Pentecost, contains much symbolism around the
number three—its theme is the Holy Spirit (the third part of the Trinity), the
first movement is in three-part form, and three trumpets are featured. Four soloists will enhance this complex and
beautiful work. In addition, TCS
presents Vivaldi’s Gloria. Divided into 11
movements, this piece was “rediscovered’ in the 1940s and has become very
popular.
“People enjoy
this piece very much,” states TCS Artistic Director James Kreger. “It’s one of my favorite choral works and is
a nice contrast to the other works on the program.”
The Singers will
present selections from Geistliche
Chormusic by Heinrich Schütz, one of Germany’s greatest Baroque composers
of the period. This is the second performance
of the music of Schütz TCS has done in the past two seasons, to wide audience
acclaim. The concert will also include Crucifixus
by Antonio Lotti.
An Award-Winning Organization
TCS has long
striven to "Transform the City through Song," with an unparalleled
commitment to both music and community service. TCS performances have raised
over $125,000 for local non-profit organizations in the last six years alone.
This season, TCS continues the tradition by donating all concert ticket
proceeds to groups that promote youth leadership development.
TCS combines
superb musical artistry and compassionate social service, donating all ticket
proceeds to non-profit organizations that serve Washington residents in
need. TCS continues to receive
recognition for its musical excellence and its unique service to the Washington
community. Recent awards include
Washingtonian Magazine's "Washingtonian of the Year" in 2000 and
Artistic Director James Kreger's honor as a WETA-FM Hometown Hero award in
2001.
Since 1991,
Beacon House Community Ministry, Inc., the beneficiary of all concert proceeds
May 15, has tutored, mentored and enriched the lives of at-risk children and
youth who live in and around the low-income community of Edgewood Terrace in
Ward 5. Beacon House¹s mission is to give its children educational and social
sustenance, with the ultimate goal of preparing them for productive involvement
in their community and society. Beacon House serves roughly 350 children a year
with a variety of programs, including structured tutoring programs, mentoring
groups, athletic teams, dance and music instruction, and a summer camp that
serves almost 200 children.
A free reception will follow
the performance. Tickets are $20 for
adults and $15 for seniors and students.
