2006-2007 Season Sneak Preview
Dear Friends of TCS,
These are supposed to be the lazy days of summer, but this is perhaps the busiest time of the year for the artistic director of a choral ensemble. (OK, December doesn’t count!) There is a whole season that needs to be planned, music to be ordered, new and current singers to be auditioned, orchestral musicians to be contracted, rehearsal schedules to be devised, concert venues to be selected, and publicity materials to be approved. It is also advantageous to spend time studying and preparing the upcoming season’s music in preparation for the first rehearsal in September. All of this is in preparation for what promises to be an adventurous season of music making for TCS, which also includes our third world premiere in six years! Let me give you a brief preview to whet your appetite for our 2006-2007 concert season.
Our season kicks off on Saturday, November 4, with our annual Season Preview Concert and Gala Silent Auction. Here you can learn about our unique mission, meet the season’s beneficiaries, and be tempted by a sampling of the music from each of our three subscription concerts. Stay after the concert and enjoy great food and drink with other TCS supporters, the singers and the board at our incredible silent auction, the proceeds of which benefit the great work we do.
A TCS Christmas will be held on Sunday, December 17, at 4 p.m. This popular concert with orchestra will feature Frank Ferko’s A Festival of Carols for harp and chorus. The concert will also include carols of the Christmas season featuring music of Gerald Near, Michael Head, Kirke Mechem, John Rutter, Daniel Pinkham, and David Willcocks. As is our holiday tradition, we will also have a festive and spirited audience sing-along of favorite carols with orchestra.
The season continues on Saturday, March 24, at 8 p.m. with Passion and Prose. This concert will include Kenneth Mahy’s Four Love Songs, Vincent Persichetti’s Flower Songs, and Robert Grenier’s “In Praise of Charity,” as well as works by Byron Adams, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Jean Berger. The highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of Gwyneth Walker’s A Heart in Hiding (“The Passionate Love Poems of Emily Dickinson”). The composer will be present at the concert and will speak about her new composition.
The season concludes on Saturday, May 19, at 8 p.m. with Sacred Mysteries. This concert with orchestra will feature John Rutter’s Requiem, Maurice Duruflé Quatre Motets sur des themes les gregoriens, as well as music of Camille Saints-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré.
Complete information will be available in our season brochure, which will be mailed in late August.
I look forward to seeing you at our performances this coming season. In the meantime, enjoy those remaining lazy days of summer.
Best wishes,
James Kreger
Artistic Director
