MAY 2007 CONCERT
Thomas Circle Singers presents
Sacred Mysteries on May 19
WASHINGTON, DC—The Thomas Circle Singers (TCS) and Orchestra closes its Concert Season with Sacred Mysteries on Saturday, May 19, at 8 p.m. at the National City Christian Church, 5 Thomas Circle NW, Washington, DC. This concert will feature music by Maurice Duruflé, Oliver Messiaen, Camille Saint-Saens, Gabriel Fauré and John Rutter.
The singers will perform sacred music of twentieth century French composers for the first half, and Requiem of British composer John Rutter during the second half. Included will be Duruflé’s four Latin motets based on Gregorian chant and his setting of the Lord’s Prayer, sung in French. A cappella and accompanied works of Fauré, Messian, and Saint-Saens, including Fauré’s melodious and lush “Cantique de Jean Racine,” will round out the first half of the concert. In addition, TCS organist Julie Evans will perform Messiaen’s “Dieu parmi nous” (God Among Us) on the magnificent Moeller pipe organ of National City Christian Church, one of the largest in the area.
John Rutter’s Requiem has become a standard in the choral repertoire since its creation in the 1980s. This is not a traditional Requiem Mass. The composer has carefully selected texts, both from the Latin Mass for the Dead and from Holy Scriptures, and created a work reminiscent of the requiems of Brahms and Fauré. Scored for chorus, soprano soloist, and chamber orchestra, the work illuminates the peacefulness and tranquility of death rather than the terrors of the day of judgment.
TCS, a 32-voice mixed choral ensemble, is known for creative programming and performances of 20th and 21st century American and European choral music, all performed with finesse and exquisite musicality.
